Linear Law, Glossary

The key terms you meet in the Linear Law chapter of SPM Add Math, each defined simply, with the Malay and Chinese term alongside.

Knowing the vocabulary of Linear Law precisely is worth easy marks in SPM Add Math. Questions often turn on a single keyword, read it correctly and the method follows; misread it and even good algebra earns nothing.

Because the SPM paper is bilingual (BM/EN), each term below shows the English and Malay wording, so your child recognises it whichever way a question is phrased.

Terms

  • Line of Best Fit, A line of best fit is the straight line that passes as closely as possible through a set of plotted points, balancing them above and below. It summarises a linear trend in data and lets us read off a gradient and intercept. It need not touch every point.
  • Linear Relation, A linear relation between two quantities produces a straight-line graph, meaning equal changes in one variable give equal changes in the other. It has the form y=mx+cy=mx+c. Recognising whether data is linear tells us if a line of best fit can be drawn directly.
  • Non-Linear Relation, A non-linear relation between two quantities gives a curved graph rather than a straight line, for example y=ax2y=ax^{2} or y=axy=\frac{a}{x}. Linear law lets us rearrange such a relation into straight-line form so it can be analysed with a line of best fit.
  • Linear Form, Linear form expresses a relationship as Y=mX+cY=mX+c, where XX and YY are combinations of the original variables plotted on the axes. Once in this form, the gradient mm and intercept cc correspond to the unknown constants of the original non-linear equation.
  • Reduction to Linear Form, Reduction to linear form is the technique of rearranging a non-linear equation so it matches Y=mX+cY=mX+c, often by taking logarithms or substituting new variables. For y=axny=ax^{n}, taking logarithms gives logy=nlogx+loga\log y=n\log x+\log a, a straight line in logx\log x and logy\log y.
  • Determining Constants from a Graph, Determining constants from a graph means reading the gradient and vertical intercept of a straight-line graph and matching them to the unknowns in a linear-form equation. If Y=mX+cY=mX+c, the gradient gives one constant and the intercept another, so measurements from the line recover the original relationship.

Using these terms in the exam

Do not just memorise definitions, practise using each term inside a full solution, the way a marker expects to see it. In the Linear Law chapter especially, stating the right definition or condition in your working can itself earn a method mark.

How to make this vocabulary stick

Vocabulary sticks best when it is tied to doing rather than reading. Instead of learning the Linear Law terms as a flat list, meet each one inside a worked question and say the step aloud in words as you write it, a term you can use in a sentence is a term you understand.

It also helps to link related terms together rather than in isolation, since Linear Law questions usually combine several ideas at once. Because the SPM paper is bilingual, glance once at the Malay and English wording of each term side by side, so the language a question is set in never throws you.
