Paper 2 technique from past-paper practice

Paper 2 rewards structured, multi-step solutions where each part builds on the last. Practise past Paper 2s for layout and linkage, define your variables, quote the formula before you substitute, and carry earlier answers into every 'hence', so long questions earn their method marks stage by stage.

What this guide covers

Paper 2 is a different exam from Paper 1, and it rewards different habits. Where Paper 1 prizes speed on tidy single-method answers, Paper 2 asks for longer, structured solutions in which each part builds on the one before.

That makes layout, linkage and steady presentation the skills that win marks. This guide gathers the Paper 2 technique our teachers coach most often: how to pace 100 marks across two and a half hours, how to lay out a multi-step answer so method marks are easy to award, how to use every 'show that' and 'hence' the way the marker expects, and how to mine your own past-paper attempts for the presentation habits that quietly leak marks in the longer questions.

Know what Paper 2 rewards

Fix the shape of Paper 2 before you time yourself against it, because the pacing and the presentation both follow from it.

  • Paper 2 is 2 hours 30 minutes for 100 marks, in Sections A, B and C. The questions run longer and are built in parts, so a single question can carry a chain of method marks.
  • There is no Paper 3, Paper 1 and Paper 2 assess the whole subject, so your Paper 2 practice trains the longer, structured half of the exam.
  • You may use a non-programmable scientific calculator; keep full figures in its memory so a value you carry into a later part stays accurate.
  • Marking is analytic: method marks are awarded stage by stage. In a long question, clear working means you keep scoring even if one later line goes wrong.

Price the long questions in minutes

Two and a half hours is 150 minutes for 100 marks, again about 1.5 minutes per mark. A 10-mark structured question is worth roughly fifteen minutes, so budget it as a block, not line by line, and keep a little time at the end for the questions you flagged.

Structure a multi-step answer

Long questions are won by presentation as much as by mathematics. These habits make your method marks easy for a marker to see and award.

    Read the whole question before part (a)

    Skim every part first. Later parts often hint at what an early answer should look like, and the word 'hence' tells you a result from a previous part must be reused rather than restarted from scratch.

    Define variables and quote the formula

    State what each letter means, then write the formula in its general form before substituting numbers. A quoted formula plus a clean substitution line is often where the first method marks sit, even before the arithmetic.

    Work downward, one idea per line

    Lay working out vertically, one manipulation per line, so each step is visible. Cramped or sideways working hides the very method the marker is looking to reward.

    Carry answers forward deliberately

    When a part says 'hence', write the earlier result into the new line so the link is explicit. Keep the full unrounded value in your calculator for the carry, and round only in the final stated answer.

'Show that' is worth all its marks in the working

When a part gives you the answer to 'show that', the marks are entirely in a complete, logical derivation, you cannot earn them by writing the target result at the end. Show every step to it, and if you cannot reach it, still write the method: a sound partial derivation scores where a jump to the given answer does not.

Mine your own Paper 2 attempts

Because Paper 2 questions are long, your mistakes cluster in predictable places. Read your own attempts to find them.

  • Broken-link check: mark where you failed to use an earlier part on a 'hence', and re-did work you had already done. That is lost time and often lost marks.
  • Carry-forward errors: look for places where a rounded intermediate value made a later part wrong. Rehearse keeping full figures in memory across the whole question.
  • Presentation losses: find answers that were mathematically right but so cramped that a marker would struggle to follow the method. Redo them laid out cleanly.
  • Stall points: note the exact part where a long question stopped scoring, and drill that single technique rather than re-doing the whole question.

Rehearse the structure, not the numbers

Redo Paper 2 questions to rehearse the structure, defining, quoting, substituting, carrying forward, concluding, never to memorise the values. The exam changes the numbers; it keeps asking for the same well-organised, staged solution.

A strong Paper 2 answer reads top to bottom like a short argument: variables defined, formula quoted, one clean line per step, and each 'hence' visibly using the result above it. You budget the long questions as blocks of minutes and rarely run out of time on the parts you can do.

Your marking pass shows method marks banked all the way down even when a final value is slightly off, and your losses are increasingly about a single stalled technique rather than a whole question falling apart.

How should I split my time in Paper 2?
