Turning past-paper practice into marks

Doing more past papers does not raise your mark on its own, closing the loop does. Score each attempt honestly against the method marks, sort your losses by cause, fix the one that costs the most marks first, then re-test that same skill.

Practice becomes marks when every paper you do changes what you practise next.

What this guide covers

It is possible to work through a stack of past papers and see your mark barely move. The papers are not the problem, the missing step is the loop that turns each attempt into a change in what you do next.

This guide sets out that loop: how to score a paper honestly against the way Add Math is marked, how to sort the marks you lost by their real cause rather than by topic, how to spend your limited study time on the loss that costs the most marks first, and how to re-test the same skill so you can see the gain. Done this way, practice stops being an activity you complete and becomes a measurement that steadily lifts your mark.

Close the loop on every paper

Marking is analytic, which means method marks are awarded stage by stage. That single fact is what makes the loop work: because marks live in the steps, you can see exactly where each one was won or lost and act on it.

    Score honestly against the method

    Mark your own script the way a marker would, giving credit for each correct step, not just the final answer. A right answer with missing working and a wrong answer with sound working both tell you something you need to know.

    Sort each lost mark by cause

    For every mark you did not get, write one word: concept, method, arithmetic, presentation, or timing. Do not sort by topic, two 'differentiation' losses can have completely different causes and completely different fixes.

    Rank the causes by mark cost

    Add up the marks lost under each cause across the paper. The biggest total is where an hour of work buys you the most marks, start there, not with whatever topic feels least comfortable.

    Rehearse the fix, then re-test

    Drill the exact skill behind the biggest loss on a few short questions, then re-attempt a question of that shape under timing. If the mark comes back, the loop closed; if not, your fix was aimed at the wrong cause.

One paper, one target

Resist the urge to fix everything a paper reveals. Pick the single cause that cost the most marks and make it the only target until your next attempt shows it improving.

A narrow fix that sticks beats five vague intentions that fade by the weekend.

Know why the mark was lost

Most students lump every slip together as 'careless'. Separating the causes is what tells you what to actually do differently, because each cause has a different fix.

  • Concept: you did not know the idea or the rule. The fix is learning, not more papers, go back to that subtopic before you drill it.
  • Method: you knew the idea but chose the wrong route or missed a step in the standard working. The fix is rehearsing the steps of that method until the sequence is automatic.
  • Arithmetic: the method was right but a number went wrong. The fix is slowing the risky lines, sign changes, fractions, substitutions, and checking them, not re-learning the topic.
  • Presentation: the mathematics was right but the working was too cramped or jumped steps, so method marks were not visible to award. The fix is laying working out one clean line at a time.
  • Timing: you could do it but ran out of clock. The fix is pacing and question order, not the topic at all, see our timing guide.

Do not re-teach yourself a topic you already know

If your loss was arithmetic or presentation, re-reading the whole chapter wastes the study time that a concept gap somewhere else badly needs. Match the fix to the cause: a slip in the working and a hole in the understanding are treated in completely different ways.

Make the gain visible

The loop only pays off if you can see it working, so measure the same skill twice, before and after your fix.

    Note the mark you lost

    Before you fix anything, write down the exact marks lost to the target cause on this paper, for example, four marks lost to sign errors in differentiation. That number is your baseline.

    Do the focused work

    Rehearse the specific fix on a small set of questions of the same shape, keeping your working clean so you can see whether the fix is holding.

    Re-test under the same conditions

    Re-attempt a fresh question of that shape under timing, then score it the same honest way. Compare the marks lost to the same cause against your baseline.

    Bank it or repeat it

    If the loss shrank, the skill is improving, move to the next-biggest cause. If it did not, your fix was aimed wrong; re-check the cause and try a different fix rather than doing more of the same.

What doing this well looks like

The signs it is working

When practice is turning into marks, every paper you finish ends with one clear sentence: 'I lost the most to X, so this week I drill X.' Your losses to your old worst cause shrink attempt by attempt, and new losses appear in different places rather than the same one over and over.

You stop counting how many papers you have done and start tracking which causes you have closed. Your marks rise in steps you can point to, the sign errors that used to cost four marks now cost one, because each paper you sat actually changed what you practised next.

I keep doing past papers but my mark isn't rising. Why?

Almost always because the loop is open, you finish a paper and start the next one without changing what you practise. The paper only lifts your mark when it changes your next session: score it honestly, find the cause that cost the most marks, fix that one thing, and re-test it.

Volume without diagnosis rarely moves a mark.

How do I know whether a loss was 'method' or just 'careless'?

Ask whether the working showed the right route. If the route was right but a number slipped, that's arithmetic; if the route itself was wrong or a standard step was missing, that's method.

The distinction matters because arithmetic is fixed by slowing and checking risky lines, while method is fixed by rehearsing the steps until they are automatic.

Should I fix everything a paper shows me?

How do I prove to myself that a fix worked?
