Using the SPM Additional Mathematics formula list well
The exam gives you a printed formula list grouped under algebra, statistics, trigonometry and geometry, for example the quadratic roots, the sum of a progression, the double-angle identities, and the sine and cosine rules. Knowing what is on it saves you from memorising those, but you still have to recognise when to use each and match the letters carefully; the list never tells you which formula a question needs.
What this page covers
Both written papers come with a printed formula list, and using it well is a skill in itself. Some students never look at it and try to memorise everything; others rely on it so heavily that they cannot recognise which formula a question is asking for.
The list is best treated as a reference that removes memory load for a fixed set of results, freeing you to concentrate on choosing and applying the right tool. This page sets out what the list gives you, grouped by topic, which important formulas are not on it and must be memorised, and how to substitute into the given ones without slipping on the letters.
Paper 1 is 2 hours (80 marks, Sections A and B) and Paper 2 is 2 hours 30 minutes (100 marks, Sections A, B and C); there is no Paper 3, and you work with a non-programmable scientific calculator.
What the formula list gives you
The given formulas are organised under a few familiar headings. Knowing they are printed means you should not spend revision time drilling them into memory, spend it on recognising when each applies.

What is not on the list, memorise these
A great deal of everyday Add Math is not on the sheet. These you have to carry in your head:
- The laws of logarithms: , , and .
- The sum and product of the roots of : and .
- Coordinate geometry: the gradient , the distance and midpoint formulas.
- Differentiation: , and the product, quotient and chain rules.
- Integration of , and using it for area under a curve and volume of revolution.
- Kinematics along a line: and .
A test to sort them
Before the exam, work through a topic list and ask of each formula: is this printed, or must I know it? Anything not printed goes onto your memorise pile, and that pile is where your revision time is best spent.
Applying a given formula without slipping
Having a formula in front of you is not the same as using it correctly. The commonest error is mismatching the letters, for example, in the cosine rule the angle must be the one opposite the side you are finding.

Read the letters
Check what each symbol stands for and match it to the quantities in your question.

Substitute carefully
Write the formula, then the substituted version, before you press a single calculator key.

Mind the angle mode
Set the calculator to degrees or radians as the question requires before evaluating any trig value.

Use the cosine rule, taking care that is the angle opposite the side we want:
So cm. The method mark rewards quoting the rule with the angle correctly placed opposite ; a common slip is to use the wrong angle or to forget the calculator must be in degrees.

Is the formula list the same in both papers?
The same printed list of given formulas accompanies the written papers, grouped under algebra, statistics, trigonometry and geometry. Knowing exactly what it contains means you never waste memory on those results and can focus on choosing and applying the right one.
Which formulas do I still have to memorise?
Anything not printed, for example the laws of logarithms, the sum and product of quadratic roots, the differentiation and integration rules, coordinate-geometry formulas, and kinematics relations. Sort each topic into 'given' and 'memorise' during revision.
If the formula is given, why do students still lose marks?
Because a printed formula does not tell you when to use it or how to match the letters. In the cosine rule, for instance, the angle must be opposite the side you are finding.
Read the symbols, substitute carefully, and check the calculator's angle mode.
Can I write my own notes on the formula list in the exam?
Treat the printed list as a clean reference and do your working on the answer space, not on the sheet. The safest approach is to know the list well beforehand so that in the exam you simply read, match the letters, and substitute.
