How SPM Additional Mathematics marking works
Add Math is marked analytically: credit is split across the steps, so a correct method earns method marks even when the final figure is wrong, and a right answer with no working can lose them. Show every line, define your variables, keep to the required accuracy, and carry a value forward if an earlier part slipped, the working is where most of the marks live.

Knowing how a paper is marked changes how you write your answers. Add Math is marked analytically, which means marks are awarded across the steps of a solution, not only for the final number.
A question worth several marks is really several smaller credits: for choosing the right method, for substituting correctly, for carrying the algebra through, and for the final accurate answer. This is good news for a careful student, a small arithmetic slip need not cost the whole question, but it changes nothing for someone who writes only the answer.

Paper 1 is 2 hours (80 marks, Sections A and B) and Paper 2 is 2 hours 30 minutes (100 marks, Sections A, B and C); there is no Paper 3.
Method marks and accuracy marks
Under analytic marking, a solution earns two broad kinds of credit. Method marks reward doing the right thing, choosing the correct rule, substituting values into the right formula, setting up the correct equation.
Accuracy marks reward getting the right number at the end of a correct method. The two are separate, which is why the way you set out your work matters as much as the answer itself.

A right answer can still drop marks
If a question says 'show that' or carries several marks, an answer with no working may score below full marks, because the examiner cannot see the method that the marks are set aside for.

If a student mis-added but still wrote the formula and the substitution clearly, the method marks for choosing and using the formula would stand; only the final accuracy would be affected. A student who wrote just with no lines above risks the method marks entirely, even though the answer is right.
Habits that protect your marks
- Write one clear line per step so each method mark has something to land on.
- Define your variables, say what stands for before you use it.
- Keep to the accuracy the question asks for; where none is stated, four significant figures is a safe default.
- Carry units through the working and into the final answer.
- If an early part slipped, carry your value forward, a correct method on a wrong number still earns follow-through marks.
- Do not erase working; cross it out with a single line so a correct method is never lost.
The calculator gives a number, not a method
A non-programmable scientific calculator can produce the final figure, but the method marks come from the setup you write down. Always show the substitution and the working, not just the calculator's answer.

What does 'analytic marking' actually mean?
It means marks are awarded across the steps of a solution, for the right method, the correct substitution, and the accurate final answer, rather than all-or-nothing on the last number. This is why a correct method with a small slip can still score most of the marks.
Can I lose marks even if my final answer is correct?
Yes, especially on 'show that' questions or higher-mark items. If the working is missing, the examiner cannot award the method marks that the question sets aside, so a bare answer may score below full marks.
What happens if I make a mistake early in a long question?
