Building an Add Math study schedule that actually works

Add Math rewards a schedule built around three things: short, frequent practice sessions rather than weekend crams; a rolling review of older chapters, because the subject is cumulative; and protected time for the heavier topics like calculus. A timetable that does those three things beats a longer one that ignores them.

Why a generic timetable fails for Add Math

Most study timetables treat every subject and every week the same: two hours here, an hour there, tick the box. That approach quietly fails Add Math, for two reasons that are specific to this subject.

The first is that Add Math is cumulative, later topics stand on earlier ones. Progressions lean on your algebra; coordinate geometry uses straight-line work you met before; differentiation assumes you are fluent with functions and indices.

A schedule that finishes a chapter and never returns to it lets the foundation crumble while you build the next floor on top.

The second reason is that Add Math is a doing subject, not a reading one. You cannot revise it the way you might revise a set of history notes, by reading them over.

You only really know a method when you can carry it out yourself, on paper, without the worked example beside you. So a schedule that is mostly reading and highlighting feels productive but changes very little.

A schedule that is mostly working problems is the one that moves your marks.

Little and often beats the weekend cram

Four short sessions across the week will do more for you than one long session at the weekend, even if the total time is the same. Skills fade between contacts, and a technique you practised on Monday is still warm on Wednesday if you touch it again, but nearly cold if you leave it until the next weekend.

Frequent, shorter contact keeps methods within easy reach instead of forcing you to relearn them each time.

A realistic dose

Thirty to forty-five focused minutes, four or five days a week, is plenty for most students, and far more sustainable than a three-hour marathon you will dread and eventually skip. Short and regular is what actually gets done.

Shorter sessions also protect the quality of your practice. Add Math is demanding to concentrate on, and the last hour of a three-hour block is usually careless, tired work that teaches you bad habits.

A tight forty minutes where you are actually thinking is worth more than a long stretch where you are just filling time.

Tie it to class, and protect the harder chapters

The simplest anchor for your weekly plan is what your class is doing right now. Practise this week's topic this week, while it is fresh and while you can still ask your teacher about it.

Falling a topic behind in Add Math is expensive precisely because the next topic often depends on this one, so keeping pace with class is the cheapest way to stay afloat.

On top of that, ring-fence extra time for the chapters that genuinely take more repetitions to settle. For most students those include differentiation and integration, the trigonometric functions, and indices and logarithms, topics with a lot of moving parts and easy places to slip.

Giving these an extra session, rather than the equal share a generic timetable would, is simply matching your effort to where it is needed.

Keep Form 4 alive in Form 5

If you are in Form 5, keep a small, rolling review of Form 4 foundations, functions, quadratics, indices, running in the background. The final exam covers both years, and the Form 4 work is exactly what the Form 5 topics quietly rely on.

The three ingredients every week needs

A week that works has three ingredients, not one. Most students only do the first and wonder why old topics keep slipping.

  • New practice on the current topic, so you keep pace with class.
  • Mixed review of an older chapter, so foundations stay solid and do not need relearning later.
  • Error review, going back over questions you previously got wrong, which is where the fastest improvement usually hides.

That third ingredient is the one students skip most and need most. Keep a simple error log: whenever you get a question wrong, note the topic and what went wrong, a formula misremembered, a sign lost, a question misread.

Once a week, redo those questions from scratch. Fixing a mistake you have actually made sticks far better than doing a fresh question you happen to get right.

That fifth session matters because some formulas are given to you in the exam and some you are expected to know by heart. Check which ones appear on the exam's formula list and which do not, then spend a few minutes each week drilling the ones you must memorise, differentiation rules, expansions, key identities, until recalling them is automatic under pressure.

Building toward full papers as the exam nears

Your schedule should change shape as the exam approaches. Early in the year, single-topic sets are right, you are still building each method.

Later, shift the balance toward mixed sets that jump between topics the way a real paper does, and then toward full, timed practice papers, so that exam stamina and pacing become part of what you have trained.

Practising against the clock matters because the two papers ask different things of you, Paper 1 runs 2 hours for 80 marks across Sections A and B, and Paper 2 runs 2 hours 30 minutes for 100 marks across Sections A, B and C, with no Paper 3. Sitting a full paper in one timed block is the only way to find out where your time actually goes.

And because the marking is analytic, practise writing out complete working, not just final answers, the method marks are part of what you are rehearsing.

A schedule is easier to keep, and easier to get right, when someone is helping you shape it around your real strengths and gaps. Working one-to-one, a teacher can see which chapters need the extra session, keep your error log honest, and adjust the plan week by week as the exam gets closer, so your time lands where it will do the most good.

How many hours a week should I study Add Math?

There is no single right number, and total hours matter less than how they are spread. For most students, thirty to forty-five focused minutes on four or five days does more than one long weekend session of the same total length, because Add Math skills fade between practice and stay warm with frequent contact.

Is it better to study one topic at a time or mix them?
