Note-taking that actually helps in Add Math
Good Add Math notes are not a copy of the board, they are a record of exactly where you got stuck and how you got unstuck. Built around worked examples rather than topics, they quietly turn into your own revision tool by the time Paper 1 and Paper 2 come around.
Why copying down the teacher's working rarely helps later
Most students take notes the same way: the teacher works through a question on the board, and the student copies it, line by line, into an exercise book. It feels productive in the moment, the page fills up, the working looks complete, and closing the book afterwards feels like something has been learned.
The trouble is that copying is not the same skill as solving. Following someone else's method while they explain it in real time uses a much lighter kind of attention than working the same question from a blank page, later, on your own.
This is worth being honest about, because it explains why a notebook full of neat, correct working can still leave a student stuck the moment a similar question appears on a test, phrased slightly differently. The note was accurate.
It just was not doing the job a note is supposed to do, which is to let you reproduce the method later, without anyone guiding you through it.
A simple test for any note you've just taken
Cover the page a day later and try a similar question from memory. If you cannot get through it without looking, the note has not done its work yet, it needs a second pass, not just a first copy.
What to record instead of the full working
The working itself matters less than three things around it, and these are what a good note should actually capture. First, the trigger, what specific detail in the question told you which method to reach for.
A phrase like "rate of change" pointing to differentiation, or "constant ratio" pointing to a geometric progression, is often more useful to write down than the algebra that follows, because spotting the trigger is the harder skill under exam pressure. Second, the exact step where you personally hesitated or nearly went wrong, not the whole method, just that one moment, described in your own words.
Third, whether the formula involved is one supplied on the list issued with the exam paper, or one you are expected to know from memory, because these need different kinds of revision.

A note format built around worked examples, not topics
Rather than one continuous set of notes for "Differentiation" or "Progressions", a format that holds up better under exam pressure is one worked example per entry. Each entry is short, a question type, not an essay, but it is built the same way every time, which makes it fast to review later and fast to compare against a new question you're unsure about.

One line describing what kind of question this is, in plain words, not the chapter name, but the specific pattern, such as "finding the equation of a normal to a curve".

The specific phrase or feature in the question that told you which method applies.

Not the full working, the sequence of moves, briefly, as if explaining it to a friend who has not seen the question.

Note the mark logic
Which steps would earn a method mark even with a small arithmetic slip later, since marking is analytic and working is marked, not just the final answer.
Organise notes by chapter, not by the date you wrote them
A notebook filled in date order, lesson by lesson, is natural to write but awkward to revise from, by the time Paper 1 or Paper 2 approaches, differentiation notes from March are scattered between geometry notes from April and statistics notes from May. Keeping a separate section per chapter, even if it means copying an entry across after class, pays for itself the first time you sit down to revise one topic properly.
The same organisation is worth applying to formulas specifically. Some of the formulas used throughout Add Math are supplied on the formula list issued with the exam paper; others are not listed there and have to be recalled from memory.
A short, chapter-organised list marking which is which, built gradually across the year rather than assembled in a panic the week before Paper 1, becomes one of the most useful pages in the whole notebook.
Don't leave this to exam week

Mistakes that quietly waste the effort
Note-taking fails less often because a student is lazy, and more often because the habit was never really examined.
- Writing down everything the teacher says, instead of only the point that was actually difficult, this produces long notes that are tiring to review and contain little that's actually new information for you
- Recording only the final answer to a worked example, not the method or the trigger, the answer is the least useful part to have written down later
- Never reopening notes until close to Paper 1 or Paper 2, by which point half of them no longer make sense without the original context
- Keeping every chapter mixed together in one continuous notebook, which makes focused revision by chapter far slower than it needs to be

A student working alone can only note what they noticed. A teacher watching a student work, one-to-one, often catches the moment a note should have been made and wasn't, the hesitation before a step, the wrong method nearly chosen, the formula reached for from the wrong list.

Should I take notes during class, or just listen and copy up afterwards?
Listening for the trigger, the detail that tells you which method to use, matters more in the moment than writing every line down. A quick note on the trigger and the tricky step, made during or right after the lesson, is usually more useful than a full transcript of the board.
How often should I go back to old notes?
Notes that are never reopened until Paper 1 or Paper 2 approaches lose most of their value, since the context around them fades. A short weekly pass through recent entries, before moving on to new material, keeps them usable.
Should I keep separate notes for Paper 1 and Paper 2 topics?
It helps to at least tag entries by paper, since Paper 1 runs 2 hours for 80 marks across Sections A and B, while Paper 2 runs 2 hours 30 minutes for 100 marks across Sections A, B and C, revision often happens paper by paper as the exam gets closer.
Is it worth rewriting messy class notes neatly afterwards?
Only if the rewrite adds something, reorganising by chapter, adding the trigger you noticed, or marking which formulas are supplied versus memorised. Copying messy notes into neat notes with no added thinking mostly wastes time that could go into a practice question instead.
