Balancing Add Math revision with your other subjects
Add Math is a practice subject, not a reading subject, so it rewards short, frequent sessions rather than one long cram. The trick to balancing it with everything else is a steady weekly rhythm that keeps your hand in, even a 20-minute problem a day beats a panicked all-nighter.
Why Add Math needs its own kind of time
Most SPM subjects can be revised, at least partly, by reading. You can sit with your Sejarah notes, reread a chapter, and genuinely know more at the end of an hour.
Add Math does not behave that way. It is a doing subject: you learn it by working through problems with a pen, getting stuck, and pushing past the stuck point.
Reading a solved example and nodding along feels like progress, but it is closer to watching someone else swim.
That matters for how you budget your week. The paper you sit is almost entirely working out mathematics under time, Paper 1 (2 hours, 80 marks, Sections A and B) and Paper 2 (2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks, Sections A, B and C), with no Paper 3.
That is a lot of writing, thinking and calculating against the clock, and the fluency it needs only comes from practising the movements often enough that they stop feeling heavy.
Little and often wins
A skill you use every few days stays warm. A skill you touch once a fortnight has to be half-relearned every time.
Twenty focused minutes of Add Math on most days will almost always beat one exhausted three-hour session on a Sunday.
How much time is fair to give it
There is no magic percentage, and anyone who hands you one is guessing. A fairer way is to weight your time by three honest questions, and let the answers decide.
- How many marks does this subject carry for me, and how much do I care about the grade?
- How far am I from where I want to be in it right now?
- How quickly does the skill fade if I stop touching it?
Add Math scores high on that third question, it fades faster than most, which is exactly why it deserves a small slice of almost every day rather than one big block once a week. There is also a hidden bonus.
The algebra, indices and equation-handling you drill for Add Math are the same tools you use in Physics and in the calculation parts of Chemistry. Time spent getting fluent at rearranging and substituting is not stolen from those subjects; it quietly pays them back.
A weekly rhythm that actually holds
A plan you can keep beats a perfect plan you abandon by Wednesday. A rhythm that survives a busy week usually looks like this:

One short warm-up problem on most days, a quick differentiation, a log equation, a couple of index-law lines, just to keep the machinery moving.

One longer set (60–90 min)
Once a week, sit a full Section A-style batch under something close to exam time, then mark it honestly.

One review slot (30 min)
Go back over what you got wrong in the week. This is where the real learning happens, not in the first attempt.
A daily warm-up can be tiny. If the topic of the week is differentiation, a warm-up might just be: given , write down the gradient function.
Thirty seconds of that, done four days running, keeps the rule automatic, so that when it shows up buried inside a longer Paper 2 question, you spend your thinking on the hard part, not on remembering how to differentiate.
Protecting Add Math when other subjects flare up
There will be weeks when a big Biology test or a Bahasa Melayu assignment swallows your evenings. The tempting move is to drop Add Math completely until the storm passes.
That is the one thing to avoid, because Add Math punishes a full stop more than almost any other subject.
- Keep a maintenance dose: even one problem a day, or ten minutes redoing a question you got wrong, is enough to stop the skill going cold.
- Redo a previously marked question rather than starting fresh, it is quicker and rebuilds confidence.
- Spend the dose on a foundation topic (functions, indices, quadratics) rather than the newest, hardest one, so the base stays solid.
Three weeks off is not a break
Stop Add Math entirely for three weeks and you usually come back needing to relearn, not revise. A tiny daily dose is far cheaper than paying that price twice.
Let the shape of the exam guide your priorities
When time is tight, spend it where it does the most work. Two features of Add Math tell you where that is.
First, some topics are chained: functions feed into quadratics, quadratics feed into calculus, and coordinate geometry leans on straight-line algebra. Fixing a shaky foundation topic pays compound interest across everything built on top of it.
- Protect the foundations first, functions, indices and logarithms, quadratic equations, straight lines.
- Then the high-frequency workhorses that appear across both papers, such as differentiation and integration.
- Leave the narrowest, most isolated topics for last if you genuinely run out of time.
Second, because the papers are marked analytically, method marks for correct steps, not only for a flawless final answer, broad steadiness usually beats narrow perfection.
