How to mark your own SPM Additional Mathematics script
Mark your own script the way the scheme does, analytically, line by line, awarding method marks for correct working even when the final answer is wrong. Be strict about presentation, separate method losses from careless ones, and log every genuine gap.

Understand how method marks work
Because marking is analytic, a multi-mark question is not all-or-nothing. A short question typically splits its marks across setting up correctly, carrying out the right method, and reaching the answer, so a correct method with a slip at the end still scores.
Take a simple original example. Suppose a 3-mark question asks for the gradient of at .

If a student differentiates correctly but then miscalculates the substitution, the differentiation is still correct working, a real scheme awards the method mark for it. When you mark yourself, you must give yourself that mark too, and separately flag the arithmetic slip.
Marking your whole script as a single tick or cross throws away exactly the information you need.
'Show that' questions are pure method
When a question gives the answer and asks you to 'show that' it is true, the marks are entirely in the working. Skipping steps because 'the answer is obviously right' loses marks even with a correct final line, so when you self-mark these, judge the working, not the destination.
Mark line by line
Marking to the scheme is a routine, not a glance. Work through each question the same way every time.

Finish and rule off first
Complete the whole question before you look at any answer. Marking as you go tempts you to 'fix' working retrospectively, which hides the real mistake.

Read the scheme's stages
Identify the natural stages of the question, set-up, method, answer, and check each against your script. Award yourself the mark for every stage you actually did correctly, regardless of the final answer.

Locate the exact break
Where you lost a mark, mark the precise line it happened on, not just the question. 'Lost 2 on Q7' is useless; 'sign error on the second line of the expansion' is a task you can fix.

Label the cause
Write beside each loss whether it was a method gap (you did not know what to do) or an execution slip (you knew, but miscopied, mis-signed, or mis-keyed). These two need completely different fixes.
Mark in a second colour
Do your working in one colour and your marking in another, on a later day. The gap lets you read your own script like a stranger's, and the colour split keeps the correction visibly separate from the original attempt.
Be strict about presentation
An examiner can only award marks for working they can follow. When you mark yourself, judge readability honestly, if you cannot retrace your own steps, neither could a marker.
- Did you show the method line, not just jump to a number the calculator gave you? Hidden steps forfeit method marks.
- Are units, signs, and the variable you solved for all present and correct in the final line?
- Did you answer what was asked, the right variable, the right form, to the accuracy the question specified?
- Is each step legible and in order, so a marker could follow it without guessing?
Do not mark yourself too kindly
The most common self-marking mistake is awarding a mark because you 'knew what you meant'. A marker cannot read your mind, if the step is not on the page, the mark is not earned.
Mark to what you wrote, not to what you intended, and the practice becomes honest.

Do I get marks if my final answer is wrong?
