Calculator Rules for SPM Additional Mathematics
In SPM Add Math you may use a non-programmable scientific calculator. Set the angle mode correctly, key expressions with brackets, keep full accuracy until the last line, and always show working, because marking is analytic, the marks come from your steps, not from a number typed straight off the screen.
What the exam allows
In SPM Add Math you are allowed one tool that many students under-use and a few students trip over: a calculator. The rule itself is short, you may use a non-programmable scientific calculator, but the way you set it up and drive it decides whether it saves you time or quietly costs you marks.

Because marking is analytic, method marks are awarded for the steps you show, so a correct number typed straight from the screen, with no working, is worth far less than the same number reached through visible steps.
A non-programmable scientific calculator is the ordinary scientific model most students already own: it handles powers, roots, logarithms, trigonometry and fractions, but it cannot store or run programs. A graphing calculator, or any programmable device, sits outside that description, so it is not the tool the paper assumes.

Setting your calculator up before you start
A minute of set-up before the clock starts prevents the errors that are hardest to spot later. Run the same short routine every time:

Choose the right angle mode
Set the calculator to degrees (DEG) or radians (RAD) to match the question. Most trigonometry is in degrees; arc length, sector area and any question written in radians need RAD.

Clear old values and settings
Reset any stored variables or a previous answer so a leftover value cannot creep into a fresh calculation.

Check the display format
Make sure the calculator is not fixed to too few decimal places, so you keep accuracy through the intermediate steps.

Test one value you know
Confirm the mode with something familiar, such as . If the display does not match, the mode is wrong.
The most expensive setting
If the calculator is in radian mode when a question is in degrees, is read as radians and returns about instead of . Every trigonometric value in that question is then wrong, even though your method is perfect.
Check the mode before the first trig question, and again whenever an answer looks strange.
Using it without losing method marks
The calculator gives you a number; the marks come from your working. Under analytic marking an examiner follows your solution line by line and rewards each correct step, the formula you quote, the substitution you make, the rearrangement, the evaluation.
If you write only the final answer, there is nothing for the method marks to attach to, and a small slip can leave you with almost nothing. So use the calculator to check and to finish, not to skip the middle.
- Write the formula and the substitution before you touch the calculator, so the method marks are on paper even if the arithmetic slips.
- Key a long expression in one go using brackets, then record the result, do not copy half-answers back and forth.
- Keep full accuracy in the calculator through the working and round only at the final line.
- Use the calculator to check a rearrangement or a factorised answer by substituting a value, not to replace the algebra.
Common calculator mistakes and how to avoid them
Most calculator errors in Add Math come from four habits. Recognise them and each one has a simple fix:

Without the brackets the calculator would divide only the last term by , and the answer collapses even though the formula was right.
