Showing working the way that earns full marks

Correct working does not automatically earn every mark it deserves, it has to be laid out so an examiner marking quickly can actually follow it: one clear step per line, the right formula shown before it is used, and a final answer that is easy to find. The method matters, but so does how it reaches the page.

Why correct working is not automatically full working

It is possible to know exactly how to solve a question, do every step correctly in your head or on scratch paper, and still not receive full marks, because the marks are awarded for what appears on the answer script, not for what was understood while writing it. SPM Add Math is marked analytically, which means individual steps of method each carry their own credit.

An examiner working through many scripts needs to be able to find those steps, not infer that they must have happened somewhere.

This is not a trick or a formality. It is the practical reality of how a large exam gets marked consistently: the working on the page is the only evidence of the method that was used, so working that is hard to follow is working that is hard to credit fully, even when it is correct.

The page is the only witness

Whatever happens in your head during the exam is invisible to anyone marking the script afterwards. Only what is written down can be awarded a mark.

One clear step per line

The single habit that improves markability more than any other is writing one identifiable step per line, rather than combining two or three steps into one dense line to save space or time.

  • Compressing several steps into one line can hide exactly which part went wrong if the final answer is incorrect, making it harder to credit the parts that were right.
  • A new line for each transformation, expanding, substituting, simplifying, solving, gives each of those actions its own visible moment on the page.
  • This does not mean writing slowly. It means writing deliberately, with each line doing one clear thing.

Stating the formula before substituting numbers

A common habit under time pressure is to substitute values directly into a calculation without first writing the general formula being used. This can lose marks even when the numerical answer is correct, because it removes the evidence that the right method was chosen, as opposed to the right answer being reached some other way.

Using the formula for the sum of the first nn terms of an arithmetic progression, find the sum of the first 10 terms of the progression with first term a=3a = 3 and common difference d=4d = 4.

Weaker layout jumps straight to a single dense line of numbers, with no formula shown:

A layout built for full marks states the formula first, then substitutes clearly, then simplifies as a separate step:

Both versions reach 210. The second version gives an examiner three separate, checkable moments, the formula itself, a correct substitution, and a correct simplification, each able to earn credit on its own, rather than one dense line that either works entirely or does not.

Labelling steps and making the final answer easy to find

Working that is technically complete can still be hard to mark quickly if it is not organised on the page. A few habits keep working easy to follow without adding real time to your attempt.

    Restate what the question is asking before solving

    A short line such as "find xx when y=0y = 0" anchors the working that follows and makes your intention clear from the start.

    Keep working for each part of a multi-part question separate

    Clear labels such as (a), (b), (i), (ii) matching the question prevent working from one part being mistaken for another.

    Underline or box the final answer

    A final answer that is easy to spot at a glance saves an examiner from re-reading the whole block of working to find it, and reduces the chance a correct value is missed.

    Include units and the requested accuracy on the final line

    If the question asks for a value to 3 significant figures or with a unit attached, the final line should match that request exactly.

Neat is not the same as slow

None of this requires elegant handwriting or extra time. A few seconds spent labelling and underlining is a much smaller cost than the mark it can protect.

Keeping the layout intact even when a step goes wrong

Good layout matters even more, not less, when a mistake happens partway through. If a line contains an error, correcting that one line and continuing, rather than scribbling over the whole block or leaving the rest blank, keeps every surrounding step visible and markable.

A single neat line through an incorrect line, rather than heavy scribbling, keeps the working underneath legible in case part of it is still creditable.

Does it matter if my working is correct but hard to read?

Yes. Marks are awarded for what an examiner can find and follow on the page, not for the correct process that happened in your head.
