Revising smartly with past papers
Past papers are most useful for building familiarity with the exam's format and timing, Paper 1's 2 hours and 80 marks across Sections A and B, Paper 2's 2 hours 30 minutes and 100 marks across Sections A, B and C, not as a substitute for learning the syllabus itself. Used well, they turn revision into structured, timed practice with honest, method-focused self-marking, rather than a way to guess at what's ahead.
What past papers are genuinely useful for, and what they aren't
Past papers earn their place in revision because they show you, concretely, what the exam actually looks like, how questions are structured within Paper 1's two sections and Paper 2's three, how much time is realistically available, and what a non-programmable scientific calculator can and can't do for you under those conditions. That's genuinely useful information, and it's hard to get any other way.
What past papers are less useful for is building the underlying understanding of a chapter in the first place. Attempting a full past paper before you've actually worked through a topic properly tends to test how confident you feel, not what you know, and a discouraging score early on can do more harm than the practice does good.
Past papers work best once a chapter has already been learned, as a way to test and sharpen it under realistic conditions, not as the first encounter with the material.
What the format actually is
Paper 1 runs for 2 hours and carries 80 marks across Sections A and B. Paper 2 runs for 2 hours 30 minutes and carries 100 marks across Sections A, B and C.
There's no Paper 3. Both are marked analytically, with credit given for method along the way, and both are sat with a non-programmable scientific calculator.
A more useful order to work through them
Jumping straight to a full, timed past paper the first time you touch one usually isn't the most useful starting point. A more useful order works from smaller and untimed toward larger and timed.
- Start with untimed, chapter-linked questions written in the style and structure of a real paper, testing one topic at a time, so you can see how it's actually phrased and marked within the paper's format, without the added pressure of a clock.
- Move to a single section attempted under its own rough time allowance, Section A of Paper 1, for instance, worked through calmly but with a sense of the pace it needs.
- Attempt a full past paper untimed, focusing on getting the working right and complete, rather than the speed of getting there.
- Closer to the exam, attempt a full past paper under its real time limit, the genuine 2 hours for Paper 1 or 2 hours 30 minutes for Paper 2, so pacing itself becomes familiar, not just the mathematics.
Each stage removes one variable at a time, first the paper's format, then the time pressure, so by the final stage, timing is the only new thing being tested, not the mathematics itself.
Marking your own attempt honestly, under the same principle as analytic marking
Since Add Math is marked analytically, a fair self-mark isn't just a tick or a cross next to the final answer, it's a judgement, line by line, about whether each step of working would actually have earned its marks. This is where students tend to be generous with themselves without meaning to: a skipped step that felt obvious while writing it might not read as obviously correct to someone else marking it, and the exam is marked by someone else.
- Go through your own working as if you were a stranger marking it, would each line be clear and complete enough to earn credit on its own, without you mentally filling in the missing step?
- Where the final answer is wrong but the method up to a point was sound, be honest about exactly where the method itself broke down, not just that the final number doesn't match.
- Where the final answer is right but a step was skipped or unclear, don't award yourself full marks by default, a mark scheme rewards clear working, not just a correct final line.
Mark method, not just the final answer
A useful habit is marking in two passes: once for whether the final answer is correct, and a second time asking whether each individual step of working would stand on its own under scrutiny. The second pass is usually the more revealing one.
Turning past-paper mistakes into revision, not just a score
The real value of a past paper attempt isn't the score, it's what the specific mistakes reveal once you look closely at them. Simply totalling marks and moving on to the next paper wastes most of what the attempt could teach you.
For each mistake, it's worth being specific: which exact line broke down, and why. Some mistakes are careless slips, a sign error, a miscopied number, that mostly need a slower, more careful checking habit.
Others are conceptual, the method itself wasn't fully understood, and need you to revisit that topic properly rather than just attempt more questions of the same kind. A few are about the wording itself, not recognising what a question was actually asking, even though the underlying mathematics was familiar.
Sorting mistakes this way, and coming back to test yourself on the ones that keep recurring, is what actually turns a past paper attempt into revision, rather than just a data point.
Building real timing skill, not just content skill
Content knowledge and timing are two different skills, and past papers are one of the few ways to practise the second one directly.
- Attempt at least one full paper under its genuine time limit before the exam, Paper 1's 2 hours or Paper 2's 2 hours 30 minutes, so the feeling of the clock running is no longer new on the actual day.
- Notice roughly how long each section is taking you, and whether that pace is sustainable across the whole paper, not just the first few questions while you're still fresh.
- Practise using your calculator efficiently under that same time pressure, fumbling with calculator steps costs real minutes that add up across a full paper.
- If time runs out on a full attempt, note honestly where it was lost, rather than assuming it was simply "not enough time", often it's a specific section or question type eating more time than it should.
