The lost marks hiding in how you read the question

A lot of the marks students lose in SPM Add Math are not lost on the maths at all, they are lost in the reading. Answering in the wrong form, missing a command word like "hence", or ignoring "correct to three decimal places" quietly costs marks your working had already earned.

Reading a question properly is a skill you can practise.

The marks you lose before you touch the maths

When a marked script comes back with marks missing, the reason is often not a gap in knowledge. The student knew the method, picked the right formula, and did the algebra correctly, and still dropped a mark or two, because the answer they gave was not quite the answer the question asked for.

Those are the cheapest marks in the whole paper to lose, and the cheapest to save.

Add Math questions are written precisely, and every word is doing a job: the command verb, the form the answer must take, the number of decimal places, the units, a small phrase like "in terms of xx". Skimming past any of them means you have quietly started solving a slightly different problem from the one on the page.

And because the paper is marked analytically, with method marks for your working, giving the wrong final form can still cost you the accuracy mark even when everything above it is correct.

Command words tell you exactly what to do

The command verb at the start of a part tells you what kind of answer earns the mark. Mixing two of them up is a common and completely avoidable loss.

  • Solve wants the value or values of the unknown; simplify or express wants a rearranged form, not a single number.
  • Sketch wants a shape with its key features labelled, intercepts, turning point, asymptotes, and does not need accurately plotted points; plot does.
  • Show that hands you the answer already, so your job is the working that reaches it. Simply writing the given result again earns nothing.
  • Hence means you must use the result you just found; hence or otherwise lets you start fresh, though "hence" is usually the shorter route the examiner intended.
  • State or write down expects an answer with little or no working; find or determine expects working that can be marked.

A one-second habit

Circle the command verb before you start. It decides the shape of your whole answer, and circling it stops you from sketching when the question asked you to plot, or restating a result the question asked you to prove.

The form of the answer is part of the answer

A correct value in the wrong form is often not fully correct in the marker's eyes. The question usually states the form it wants, and the final accuracy mark depends on delivering it.

Suppose a part ends with solving x25x+3=0x^{2} - 5x + 3 = 0. If the question says "give your answer in exact form", you leave the surd:

x=5±132x = \frac{5 \pm \sqrt{13}}{2}

but if it says "correct to three decimal places", you must round instead:

x=4.303orx=0.697x = 4.303 \quad \text{or} \quad x = 0.697

Give the surd when the question wanted the decimal, or round when it wanted the exact value, and you have not answered the question as set, even though your working was perfect. Before you write a final line, run through the form it asked for:

  • Decimal places versus significant figures, they are not the same thing; read which one is asked.
  • Units, a length is in cm, an area in cm2^{2}; a missing or wrong unit can cost the mark.
  • "In terms of xx" means your answer should still contain xx, not a number.
  • Sign and range restrictions, "the positive value", or "for 0x3600^{\circ} \le x \le 360^{\circ}", an extra valid-looking solution outside the range is still wrong.
  • Exact versus rounded, leave π\pi, ee, surds and fractions exact unless you are told to round.

The mark allocation is quietly telling you something

The marks printed beside each part are a guide to how much working is expected. A part worth one mark usually wants a short answer you can almost state outright; a part worth four marks expects several visible steps, because there are several method marks to collect along the way.

So if a four-mark question tempts you to write a single line, treat that as a warning. Either you have skipped working the examiner would have rewarded, or you have misread what the part is actually asking.

Because the marking is analytic, laying those steps out is precisely how the method marks reach you, even if the final number slips at the end.

This runs through the whole exam

The two-paper structure keeps this true everywhere, Paper 1 (2 hours, 80 marks, Sections A and B) and Paper 2 (2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks, Sections A, B and C), with no Paper 3. In every section, the mark allocation is a hint about the depth of working expected.

A thirty-second habit that protects those marks

Careful reading is not slow reading. It is a quick, deliberate routine you run on every part before you begin solving, and it costs far less time than the marks it saves.

    Read once, then circle the verb

    Read the whole part through, then circle the command word, solve, sketch, show, hence, so you know what kind of answer is wanted.

    Underline what you are given

    Mark the given information and any conditions: a range, a sign restriction, "exact", "3 significant figures".

    Note what the answer must be

    In the margin, jot the form of the final answer, a value, an expression in terms of xx, a sketch, a proof.

    Solve, showing your working

    Work down the page one idea per line, so the method marks are visible.

  5. 5

    Check the last line against the question

    Before moving on, compare your final answer to what you underlined: right form, right units, right number of figures, inside the range.

Five seconds of checking at the end is far cheaper than the mark you would otherwise give away. On a calculator part it is also where you confirm that your non-programmable scientific calculator gave you what you actually meant to compute, rather than an answer in radians when you wanted degrees.

I understood the maths but still lost marks. How does that happen?

Usually the final answer was given in the wrong form, a decimal when an exact value was asked for, a missing unit, a solution left outside the stated range, or an answer that ignored "in terms of xx". The method was right, but the accuracy mark depends on delivering the answer the question actually asked for.

What is the difference between "hence" and "hence or otherwise"?

Hence means you must use the result you found in the previous part. Hence or otherwise lets you use any valid method, but the previous result is almost always the quickest route the examiner had in mind, so try it first.

How do I know how much working to show?

Let the mark allocation guide you. A one-mark part wants a short answer; a four-mark part expects several steps.

Because Add Math is marked analytically, each correct step can earn its own method mark, so a part worth several marks that you answer in one line is a sign you have skipped something.

Does "correct to 3 significant figures" really matter for a single mark?

Yes. The final accuracy mark depends on giving the answer in the form the question requested.

Rounding when exact form was asked, or leaving a surd when a decimal was asked, can cost that mark even though the working above it is perfect.
