How to use the SPM Add Math formula sheet
The formula sheet handed out with both Add Math papers is a list of 24 formulas you're allowed to look up instead of memorise, covering algebra, statistics, trigonometry, and geometry. Knowing exactly what's on it, and finding the right line fast, saves time you can spend on working, not searching.
What the formula sheet actually contains
Both Add Math papers come with a printed formula list you can turn to during the exam, 24 formulas in total, grouped by topic area, that you are allowed to look up rather than hold in memory. Knowing what is actually on that list, and where, is worth more than most students realise, because it changes how you prepare: some results you drill until they're automatic, and others you simply need to know how to find quickly.
- Algebra, the quadratic formula, the change-of-base rule for logarithms, and the n-th term and sum formulas for arithmetic and geometric progressions.
- Statistics, the standard (z) score, binomial probability, permutations, combinations, and the price index and composite index formulas.
- Trigonometry, the Pythagorean identity and its two related identities, the sum and difference formulas, and the double angle formulas.
- Geometry, the sine rule, the cosine rule, and the area of a triangle using two sides and the included angle.
Every one of these is supplied
All 24 formulas on this list are marked as given, you are not expected to memorise any of them. What you are expected to do is recognise, quickly, which one a question is asking for.
Reading it quickly, under time pressure
The formula list only helps you if you can find the right line fast. Paper 1 gives you 2 hours for 80 marks across Sections A and B; Paper 2 gives you 2 hours 30 minutes for 100 marks across Sections A, B and C.
There is no Paper 3. Both papers move quickly enough that flipping back and forth through the list, reading every line to find the one you need, eats into time you could be spending on working.
- Get familiar enough with the layout that you have a rough sense of where each topic group sits, algebra near the top, trigonometry and geometry toward the bottom.
- Practise scanning by shape before you scan by words, a fraction with a square root under it looks different from a sum of sines, and your eye can find that shape faster than it can read a label.
- Write the formula down first, exactly as given, before you substitute anything. This is also a scorable step under analytic marking, and it stops you carrying across a mis-copied sign.
It rewards the calm approach
Because marking is analytic, quoting the correct formula before you substitute is itself a mark-earning step. Rushing to skip that line does not save meaningful time, and it removes a mark you could have kept.
Where students go wrong with the formula list
Most of the marks lost around the formula list are not about knowing the mathematics, they are about handling the sheet under pressure. A few patterns show up again and again.
- Grabbing a formula that looks similar without checking it fits the situation, reaching for the sine rule when the question actually gives two sides and the included angle, which calls for the cosine rule instead.
- Copying it down wrong, dropping a sign, swapping a subscript, or missing the plus-or-minus in a formula like the quadratic formula, then carrying that error through the whole solution.
- Not checking what each symbol means in context, for instance in binomial probability, mixing up which value is (success) and which is (failure), when the list itself states .
- Only ever using the list in an open-book way during practice, so the exam is the first time it's read under a clock, which makes the whole page feel unfamiliar.
A copying error is not a small error
If you transcribe a formula incorrectly from the list, every mark that depends on it can be affected, even though your method was otherwise sound. Read the line twice before you write it.
A worked example: choosing and applying the right line
Here is an original question in the exam's style, showing how to move from the question wording to the correct formula on the list.
In triangle , , , and side cm. Find the length of side , correct to two decimal places.

Step 1, identify the situation. Two angles and a side opposite one of them are given, and a different side is required.
That combination, angle, opposite side, angle, opposite side, is what the sine rule is for.
Step 2, substitute the known values.
Step 3, solve for . cm.
The working shows exactly what an examiner wants to see: the correct formula quoted from the list, the substitution laid out clearly, and the final answer to the stated precision. Each of those is a separate opportunity to score.
Building familiarity before exam day
The goal is not to memorise the list, it is given to you precisely so you do not have to, but to reach exam day already comfortable with it, so nothing on the page is a surprise.
- When you practise past-style questions, always write out the formula you used from the list, in full, even if you already know it. This builds the habit the exam rewards.
- Time yourself locating a formula you have not needed in a while. If it takes longer than a few seconds, that group is worth another pass.
- Keep a simple personal note of which situations call for which formula, sine rule versus cosine rule, permutations versus combinations, since choosing the right one is the actual skill, not recalling the formula itself.
By the time exam day arrives, the formula list should feel like a tool you already know how to use, not a page you are meeting for the first time.
