How to check your answers before time runs out
Checking is not something you do "if there is time", it is a planned stage of the paper. Leave yourself a margin, then use fast, targeted checks (substitute your answer back, sanity-check the sign and size, re-key the calculator) that catch the slips actually costing marks.
Why checking deserves a place in your plan
Most marks that slip away in Add Math are not lost because a student did not know the topic. They are lost to small, avoidable slips, a sign dropped, a bracket missed, a value mis-typed into the calculator.
Checking is where you win those marks back, which makes it some of the cheapest scoring on the whole paper.
It helps to picture the time you are working with. Paper 1 gives you 2 hours for 80 marks across Sections A and B; Paper 2 gives you 2 hours 30 minutes for 100 marks across Sections A, B and C.
There is no Paper 3. That is enough time to check well if you plan for it, and not nearly enough if checking is an afterthought you reach only when the invigilator calls five minutes.
Analytic marking rewards the catch
Because Add Math is marked analytically, a slip you catch near the end recovers real marks, often a method mark or an answer mark you would otherwise have handed away. Every error you spot in checking is money back on the page.
Leave a margin, do not check "if there is time"
The single biggest change most students can make is to stop treating checking as leftover time. Plan to reach the last question with minutes to spare, and treat those final minutes as a proper stage of the exam with its own job to do.
- Pace to finish early. Aim to complete your first full pass with time in hand, not exactly on the bell.
- Flag as you go. Put a light pencil mark beside any answer you were unsure of, so checking time goes straight to the questions that need it.
- Do a first pass, then return. Answer everything you can confidently first; come back to the hard and flagged ones with a calmer head.
- Protect the check. If you are running late, it is usually better to secure one more clean answer and still check, than to chase a last part and leave everything unverified.
The checks that actually catch errors
Not all checking is equal. Re-reading your working and nodding along catches almost nothing, because your eye simply repeats the same mistake.
These active checks are different, each one attacks a specific, common kind of error.
- Substitute your answer back into the original equation. If both sides do not balance, you have found an error before the examiner does.
- Sanity-check the sign and size. A length or an area should not be negative; a probability must sit between 0 and 1; an angle should fall in the range the question allows.
- Re-key the calculator. Retype the whole line rather than trusting your first entry, watching the bracket keys and the negative sign, which are the usual culprits.
- Check the form and units asked for. Three significant figures, an exact surd, coordinates, or a specific unit, losing the form loses the mark even when the value is right.
- Check the domain. Does your value of actually lie in the interval the question set? Solutions outside the allowed range must be rejected.
Use your allowed tool well
You are permitted a non-programmable scientific calculator. Use it deliberately in checking: re-evaluate the final line, and where you can, compute a quantity by a second route so two methods have to agree.
A worked check: substituting back
The substitution check is the one to make automatic, because it verifies an answer independently of how you found it. Here is an original question in the style of the exam, followed by the check itself.

Both balance, so both solutions are confirmed. If one line had not come to zero, you would know instantly that a factor or a sign was wrong, while you still have time to fix it.
The same idea scales up: a value found from an equation can be substituted back; a turning point can be tested against the curve; a solved unknown can be fed into a second equation from the same question. The check does not have to be long, it has to be independent of the working that produced the answer.
What not to do when checking
Checking can also waste the very time it is meant to save, or even cost you marks you had already earned. A few habits do more harm than good under pressure.
- Do not rework the whole question from scratch. A full redo eats minutes you do not have; a targeted check is faster and just as reliable.
- Do not erase your original working. Analytic marking rewards visible correct steps, so rubbing out an attempt can delete method marks. Cross out neatly with a single line instead.
- Do not change an answer on a hunch. Only overwrite a solution when a check gives you a concrete reason, a substitution that failed, a sign you can see is wrong.
Second-guessing costs marks
Changing a correct answer to a wrong one because it "felt" off is a real and common way students lose marks. Trust the check, not the nerves, only revise an answer when you can point to the specific error you found.

How much time should I leave for checking?
