How method marks actually work in SPM Add Math
SPM Add Math is marked analytically: examiners award method marks for correct steps along the way, not only for a flawless final answer. Showing clear, line-by-line working means a slip near the end costs a mark or two, not the whole question.
What "analytic marking" really means
Add Math is marked analytically. That single word carries a lot of good news for students.
Analytic marking means an examiner does not just glance at your final answer and mark it right or wrong; they read your working and award marks for the correct steps you took along the way. A typical multi-step question is broken into scorable pieces, and each correct piece earns its share.
The steps that earn credit fall into two rough types. Method marks reward doing the right thing, choosing the correct formula, setting up the equation properly, applying the right rule.
Answer marks reward arriving at the correct value. The crucial consequence is that you can lose an answer mark to a small slip and still keep every method mark, as long as your working shows you knew what to do.
Why this exists
Analytic marking is designed to measure whether you understand the mathematics, not whether you can be flawless with arithmetic under pressure. That is genuinely on your side, it means understanding is rewarded even on a day when your fingers slip on the calculator.
A worked example: where the marks hide
The best way to see method marks is to watch a solution being built one scorable step at a time. Here is an original question in the style of the exam, with the working laid out so you can see where each mark would sit.
A curve has the equation . Find the coordinates of its turning point.

Notice there are four separable pieces of credit here. A student who differentiated correctly and set the gradient to zero but then made an arithmetic slip solving for would still keep the first two marks, because the working shows the correct method even though the final coordinate came out wrong.
The mark split above is illustrative, not the official scheme, but the principle is exactly how the paper behaves: several independent chances to score inside one question.
How a wrong answer can still score well
This is the part students most often do not believe until they see it. In an analytically marked question, a wrong final answer does not automatically mean zero.
Marks survive when your working is visible and correct up to the slip.
- If you differentiate correctly but make a small arithmetic error at the end, the method marks for differentiating and setting up the equation still stand.
- There is often follow-through credit: if you carry a slightly wrong value into a later, correctly-executed step, that later step can still be rewarded.
- A question you cannot fully finish is still worth attempting, because the correct opening steps earn their marks regardless of whether you reach the end.
So the worst thing you can do to your score is to work everything out in your head and write only a final number. If that number is wrong, there is nothing on the page for the examiner to reward.
The student with visible working almost always out-scores the student with a lonely, unexplained answer.
How students throw method marks away
If method marks are so generous, why do students still lose them? Almost always by hiding their thinking.
Here are the common ways good working gets thrown away:
- Skipping steps in your head, doing two or three moves at once, so the examiner cannot see the correct method you actually used.
- Not writing the formula first, quoting the formula you are about to use is often itself a scorable step, and it anchors the rest of your working.
- Erasing everything after a mistake, rubbing out a whole attempt can delete correct steps that would have scored. Cross out neatly instead.
- Not stating the final answer clearly, burying it in a line of algebra, so it is not obvious you actually reached it.
Neat is not optional
An examiner can only award a method mark for a step they can find and read. Cramped, jumbled, or half-erased working can cost you marks you genuinely earned.
Clear layout is part of scoring, not just tidiness.
How this shapes your exam strategy
Once you understand analytic marking, the smart strategy almost writes itself, and it fits the shape of both papers, Paper 1 (2 hours, 80 marks, Sections A and B) and Paper 2 (2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks, Sections A, B and C), with no Paper 3.
- Show every step, even ones you could do mentally, each is a chance to score.
- Write the formula before you use it, then substitute the numbers on the next line.
- Never leave a question blank. Set up whatever you can; the opening steps earn marks even if you cannot finish.
- State your final answer clearly, in the form and units the question asked for.
This is the reassuring symmetry of the paper: the calm, clear, honest way of working is also the highest-scoring way. You are allowed a non-programmable scientific calculator, so lean on it for the arithmetic and put your effort into showing the method that earns the marks.

Leaving it blank means certain zero; attempting it does not.
