Building a strong Form 4 foundation for Add Math

Form 4 is where Add Math is won or lost. The topics you meet this year, functions, quadratics, indices and logarithms, coordinate geometry, and your first differentiation, are the foundation Form 5 stacks on top of.

Build them properly now, with clear working, and Form 5 feels like an extension rather than a wall.

Why Form 4 quietly decides Form 5

It is easy to treat Form 4 as the relaxed year and Form 5 as the serious one. In Add Math, that is exactly backwards.

Add Math is a stacking subject: each topic borrows from the ones before it. The differentiation you meet late in Form 4 leans on functions.

The functions lean on algebra you were meant to nail early. By Form 5, the questions assume you can already do all of it fluently, and there is no gentle reintroduction.

A shaky Form 4 does not stay a Form 4 problem, it becomes a Form 5 problem wearing a heavier coat.

The encouraging side of this is that the reverse is just as true. A student who builds Form 4 carefully often finds Form 5 far kinder than their classmates expect, because the new material is mostly a new use of tools they already own.

So the goal this year is not to race ahead, it is to make the foundation genuinely solid, so nothing wobbles when more weight lands on it.

The one-sentence version

In Add Math, Form 4 is the foundation and Form 5 is the building. You cannot fix a cracked foundation by decorating the upper floors.

The Form 4 topics everything else leans on

Not every topic carries the same weight for what comes later. A few are load-bearing, and these deserve your best attention:

  • Functions, the language of the whole subject. Domain, range, composite functions like fg(x)fg(x), and inverse functions turn up everywhere. If "let f(x)=2x+3f(x)=2x+3" makes you uneasy, this is the first thing to firm up.
  • Quadratic functions and equations, roots, the discriminant, completing the square, and the shape of a parabola. This links straight to graphs, inequalities and later optimisation.
  • Indices, surds and logarithms, the rules of powers and their reverse. Logarithms feel strange at first but are just a different way of writing an index, and they return in Form 5.
  • Coordinate geometry, distance, midpoint, gradient and the equation of a straight line. Simple to start, and the backbone of many later problems.
  • Your first differentiation, the idea that a curve has a gradient at each point, written dydx\frac{dy}{dx}. Getting comfortable here early takes the fear out of Form 5 calculus.

If you are ever unsure where to spend a spare hour, spend it on functions and quadratics. They pay you back the most, in the most places.

Build the habit of showing working, starting now

Add Math is marked analytically, which means method marks are awarded for correct working along the way, not only for the final answer. On Paper 1 and Paper 2 alike, a clear line of working can earn marks even when your final number is wrong.

This is one of the kindest features of the subject, and it is a habit, not a talent. The best time to build it is Form 4, long before the pressure of the real papers.

Concretely, that means: write what you are solving for, keep one step per line, do not do algebra in your head, and never erase a wrong line so hard that you cannot see what you were thinking. A student who trains this in Form 4 walks into Form 5 already fluent.

A student who scribbles answers in Form 4 spends Form 5 trying to unlearn a bad habit under time pressure, which is far harder.

A tiny rule that pays off

For every problem, ask: could a teacher follow my page without me explaining it? If not, your working is for you, not for the marker, and the marker is the one holding the pen with the red ink.

A weekly rhythm that keeps the foundation solid

Foundations are built by repetition, not by cramming. A light, steady rhythm through Form 4 beats a panicked marathon later.

Here is a simple pattern that works for most students:

  1. After each new topic in school, redo three or four problems from scratch that same week, not reading the solution, but producing your own working.
  2. Keep a short error log: one line per mistake, and what the correct step was. Review it before the next topic.
  3. Once a month, mix old and new topics in one short session. Add Math questions rarely stay in one chapter, so practising them separately is not enough.
  4. When a topic feels shaky, go one layer down. Struggling with quadratic graphs is often really a struggle with the algebra underneath, fix that, and the graphs follow.

You are also allowed a scientific calculator (non-programmable) throughout, so part of building the foundation is knowing your own calculator well, how it handles brackets, powers, and fractions, so it never becomes a source of silly errors.

A small example of foundation paying off

Here is why the load-bearing topics matter. The discriminant of a quadratic tells you how many real roots it has:

If b24ac>0b^{2}-4ac>0 there are two distinct real roots; if it equals zero, one repeated root; if it is negative, no real roots. This single idea, met in Form 4, returns again and again, in deciding whether a line cuts a curve, in inequality problems, and in reasoning about graphs.

A student who truly owns the discriminant in Form 4 answers a whole family of later questions almost for free. That is what a strong foundation buys you: not just marks on this topic, but leverage on the next ten.

If your Form 4 foundation already feels wobbly, the honest fix is to find the exact gap and rebuild from there, and that is where careful one-to-one teaching helps most.
