Circular Measure, Key Terms

SPM Additional Mathematics papers are set bilingually in Bahasa Melayu and English, so knowing each Circular Measure term in both languages, and its precise meaning, protects you whichever way a question is phrased. Learn them until you can not only recall each term but use it correctly inside a full solution, because stating the right definition or condition in your working can itself earn a method mark.

Key terms

  • Radian (Radian · Radian · 弧度), A radian is a unit for measuring angles based on the radius of a circle: one radian is the angle at the centre that cuts off an arc equal in length to the radius. A full turn is 2π2\pi radians, so 180=π180^\circ=\pi radians, which converts between the two units.
  • Arc Length (Arc Length · Panjang Lengkok · 弧长), The arc length is the distance along the curved edge of a circle between two points. When the angle at the centre is measured in radians, it is given by s=rθs=r\theta, where rr is the radius. This simple formula is a key reason radians are used.
  • Sector (Sector · Sektor · 扇形), A sector is the region of a circle enclosed by two radii and the arc between them, shaped like a slice of pie. The angle between the two radii determines its size. A sector differs from a segment, which is bounded by a chord and an arc instead.
  • Area of a Sector (Area of a Sector · Luas Sektor · 扇形面积), The area of a sector is the space inside it, found when the central angle is in radians by A=12r2θA=\frac{1}{2}r^{2}\theta, where rr is the radius. It is the fraction of the whole circle's area matching the angle, so a semicircle gives half the circle's area.
  • Segment of a Circle (Segment of a Circle · Tembereng Bulatan · 弓形), A segment of a circle is the region between a chord and the arc it cuts off, resembling a curved cap. Its area is found by taking the area of the sector and subtracting the triangle formed by the two radii and the chord: 12r2(θsinθ)\frac{1}{2}r^{2}(\theta-\sin\theta).
  • Angle Subtended at the Centre (Angle Subtended at the Centre · Sudut Tercangkum di Pusat · 圆心角), The angle subtended at the centre is the angle formed at a circle's centre by the two radii drawn to the ends of an arc or chord. It measures how much of the circle the arc spans and appears directly in the formulas s=rθs=r\theta and A=12r2θA=\frac{1}{2}r^{2}\theta.

Using terms in the exam

Command words and technical terms are where careful reading turns into marks. When a question says "hence", it wants the previous result; "show that" wants the reasoning, not just the answer; "sketch" wants key features labelled, not a precise plot.

Combine that with the terms above and you can decode exactly what any Circular Measure question is asking before you start, which is half the battle.

How to learn these terms so they stick

Vocabulary is easiest to remember when it is tied to doing, not just reading. Rather than memorising the Circular Measure terms as a list, meet each one inside a worked question: when you use the word "gradient", "domain" or "coefficient" while actually solving a problem, its meaning fixes itself far more firmly than any flashcard.
