Why showing your working matters more than you think

Showing your working is not neatness for its own sake. Because Add Math is marked analytically, visible steps earn method marks even when the final answer slips, and just as importantly, written working is how you catch your own mistakes and how understanding actually forms.

What "showing your working" really means

Every Add Math student has heard "show your working" so many times it has stopped meaning anything. It sounds like a nag about neatness, write more, be tidy, don't rush.

But that is not really what it is asking. Showing your working means putting the logic of your solution on the page: the formula you chose, the values you put into it, and the steps that move you from the question to the answer, each one visible and in order.

The opposite of good working is not messy working, it is invisible working. It is the student who reads a question, does three moves in their head, and writes down a single number.

When that number is right, nobody notices. When it is wrong, the whole solution is gone, and there is nothing on the page to explain what they were thinking.

Understanding why working matters starts with seeing that it is about communication, not decoration.

The exam reason: analytic marking rewards visible steps

The first reason is the most concrete. Add Math is marked analytically: examiners read your working and award marks for the correct steps you take along the way, not only for a flawless final answer.

A multi-step question is broken into scorable pieces, so choosing the right formula, setting up the equation correctly, and each valid manipulation can each earn credit in its own right.

This has a direct consequence for how much a small slip costs you. If your working is visible and correct up to a late arithmetic error, the method marks for everything before the slip still stand, you lose a mark or two, not the whole question.

The student who wrote only a final number, and got it wrong, has nothing left to be rewarded. Same mistake, very different outcome, decided entirely by whether the working was on the page.

This holds across both papers

Analytic marking shapes the whole exam, Paper 1 (2 hours, 80 marks, Sections A and B) and Paper 2 (2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks, Sections A, B and C), with no Paper 3. In every section, visible working is how partial credit reaches you.

Beyond marks: working is how you catch your own mistakes

Even if no examiner ever read it, written working would still be worth doing, because it is your own best error-detector. When each step sits on its own line, a mistake has somewhere to become visible.

You can glance back, spot that a sign flipped between line three and line four, and fix it. When everything happens in your head, an error is invisible until the final answer is already wrong, and by then you cannot see where it went wrong.

  • Written steps let you check as you go, instead of discovering a problem only at the end.
  • They make it possible to substitute your answer back into the original equation to confirm it, a habit that catches many careless errors.
  • They give you something to return to if you run out of time and come back to a question later, instead of restarting from nothing.

There is a deeper effect too. Writing a solution out forces you to make each step explicit, and the act of making it explicit is often where real understanding forms.

Students who work things out on paper tend to understand the method better than students who chase the answer in their heads, not because they are cleverer, but because they made their own reasoning visible enough to learn from.

What good working actually looks like

Good working is not long working, it is clear working. A few simple habits make the difference between a solution an examiner can follow and one they cannot.

  • Write the formula first, before you put numbers in. Quoting the formula is often itself a scorable step, and it anchors everything that follows.
  • One idea per line. Substitute on one line, simplify on the next. Do not fold three moves into one.
  • Keep the equals signs honest. Each line should genuinely equal the one before, so anyone reading can follow the logic.
  • State the final answer clearly, in the form and units the question asked for, so it is obvious you reached it.

Here is the shape in miniature. Suppose you need the gradient of y=x24xy = x^{2} - 4x where the curve is flat.

Write the rule first:

dydx=2x4\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x - 4

then set it to zero and solve on the next line:

2x4=0    x=22x - 4 = 0 \;\Rightarrow\; x = 2

Two short, honest lines. Anyone reading can see exactly what you did, and if you slipped, they could see where.

That is all "showing your working" is asking for.

Breaking the "I can do it in my head" habit

The students who most need to show working are often the ones who resist it most, because they are quick and it feels slow to write everything down. But speed in your head is exactly the thing that hides errors and throws away marks.

The fix is not to think slower; it is to build the habit of thinking on paper until it feels normal.

The most expensive shortcut

Doing the arithmetic in your head to save time is the most expensive shortcut in the paper. If the answer is wrong, you lose everything the question was worth.

If it is right, you saved a few seconds. The maths is not on your side there.

The way to build the habit is to practise it when the stakes are low, in every homework question, not just the exam. Write the formula, substitute on the next line, keep one idea per line, every single time.

By the exam it should feel automatic, so that under pressure your hand does the safe thing without you having to decide.

Why do teachers keep telling me to show my working?

Yes, and being fast is exactly why. Doing steps in your head hides errors until the final answer is already wrong, and it throws away method marks if that answer slips.
