The week before your Add Math exam

The final week is for consolidating what you already know, not for learning new topics. A calm plan, timed practice on your weaker chapters, a check of the formulas you must memorise, and real sleep, serves you far better than a panicked all-nighter.

What the final week is actually for

By the last week, the honest truth is that you have already done most of the work that will decide your grade. The chapters were learned over months; the final seven days cannot replace that, and trying to cram a brand-new topic now usually does more harm than good, it eats the time and calm you need for everything else.

So the goal of this week is different. It is to consolidate: to make what you already half-know solid, quick, and reliable under pressure.

That reframing matters because it lowers the temperature. You are not racing to fill an empty tank in seven days.

You are tuning an engine that mostly runs. When students accept that, the panic drops, and calmer students make fewer careless mistakes, which, in an analytically marked paper, is exactly where the easy marks are won and lost.

One honest audit first

Before you plan anything, spend twenty minutes listing every Add Math chapter and marking each one green (comfortable), amber (shaky), or red (lost). Your week should pour most of its energy into amber, the topics you can rescue.

Red topics you have never understood are rarely fixed in a week; amber ones you half-know can become green fast.

A realistic seven-day plan

A plan you can actually follow beats a perfect plan you abandon on day two. Keep it simple and front-load the harder work while you are fresh.

Here is a shape you can adapt to your own amber and green lists.

  • Days 7–5: Work through your amber chapters one at a time. For each, re-read your notes, redo two or three questions you got wrong before, then attempt one fresh question start to finish with full working.
  • Days 4–3: Switch to mixed practice. Instead of one chapter at a time, do questions from several chapters in a row, so you rehearse recognising what a question is asking, which is a real skill of its own.
  • Day 2: Do one full timed paper under exam conditions. Sit for the real duration, use only your allowed calculator, and mark it honestly against a scheme.
  • Day 1: Light review only. Re-read the formulas you must memorise, glance over your own list of past mistakes, pack your bag, and stop early.

Notice the taper. The heaviest work is early; the day before is deliberately light.

Your brain consolidates while you rest, so a calm final day is part of the method, not a waste of it.

What to practise (and what to leave)

In the final week, practising whole questions with full working beats re-reading notes. Reading feels productive but is passive; your exam asks you to produce mathematics, so practise producing it.

And because Add Math is marked analytically, examiners award method marks for correct steps, not only for a perfect final answer, every question you write out in full is rehearsal for exactly how marks are earned.

Give priority to the two things that quietly cost marks: knowing which formulas are supplied and which you must carry in your head, and using your calculator cleanly. You are allowed a non-programmable scientific calculator, and the last week is the time to make sure your fingers know it, degree versus radian mode, storing a value, reading it back, so it never surprises you in the hall.

Do not spend the week on your strongest chapter

It is comforting to keep redoing topics you are already good at, because you get everything right and feel clever. But those marks are already safe.

The week pays off when you spend it on the amber topics that are still wobbling.

One worked reminder is worth more than a page of theory. If Differentiation is amber for you, do not just re-read the rules, redo a turning-point question end to end:

Then set the derivative to zero, solve, and state the point. Writing it out, not reading it, is what makes it stick.

Looking after your body and your nerves

This is the part serious students skip, and it is often the difference on the day. A tired brain makes careless mistakes, a dropped minus sign, a misread question, and careless mistakes are the single most common way a capable student loses marks in the maths papers.

No amount of extra revision helps if you arrive exhausted.

  • Sleep on a normal schedule all week, and especially the two nights before. An all-nighter trades a few hours of tired revision for a whole day of foggy thinking.
  • Eat and drink normally. Skipping breakfast to save time is a false economy in a two- to two-and-a-half-hour paper.
  • Take real breaks. Short, focused study blocks with genuine rest between them beat long, blurry marathons.
  • Move a little. A short walk resets your head far better than another anxious hour at the desk.

If nerves are the problem rather than the content, remember that a little adrenaline is normal and even helpful, it sharpens focus. The aim is not to feel nothing; it is to stay steady enough to read carefully and show your working.

The day before and the morning of

The day before is for logistics and light review, not heroics. Pack what you need so the morning is calm: a working non-programmable scientific calculator (and a spare battery if you can), spare pens, a pencil, a ruler, and your identification.

Confirm the reporting time and place. Small certainties on the morning free up all your attention for the actual mathematics.

It also helps to know the shape of what you are walking into so nothing feels unfamiliar. Add Math is two papers, Paper 1 (2 hours, 80 marks, Sections A and B) and Paper 2 (2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks, Sections A, B and C), and there is no Paper 3.

Knowing the lengths and sections in advance means you are managing time, not discovering the format.

The first five minutes

When you sit down, breathe, read the instructions properly, and start with a question you know you can do. Banking an early, confident answer settles the nerves and reminds you that you can, in fact, do this.
