How to actually learn from your Add Math mistakes
You learn from an Add Math mistake only when you find out why it happened, not just that it happened. Sort each error into careless slip, method gap, or concept gap, keep a short mistake log, and use the fact that method marks reward correct steps to stop small errors costing whole questions.
Why redoing questions isn't enough
Most students "go over" a wrong question by reading the correct solution, nodding, and moving on. It feels like learning, but it usually is not.
Recognising a correct answer is far easier than being able to produce one, and understanding why you went wrong is different again. If you only redo the question, you often just re-walk the same path, including the same wrong turn, a few weeks later.
Learning from a mistake means answering a sharper question: not "what was the right answer?" but "why did I do what I did, and what would stop me doing it again?"
That shift, from correcting the answer to correcting the cause, is the whole difference between practice that improves you and practice that just fills time.
The three kinds of mistakes, and why the difference matters
Not all mistakes are the same, and each kind needs a different fix. Before you can learn from an error, you have to name which type it is:
- Careless slip, you knew the method and could have done it, but dropped a sign, copied a number wrongly, or misread the question. The knowledge was there; the execution slipped.
- Method gap, you understood the topic but did not know the right procedure or the efficient route, so you got stuck or took a wrong approach.
- Concept gap, something underneath is not understood: a foundation idea from an earlier topic, or a rule you are applying wrongly. This is the one that quietly repeats across many questions.
Don't file everything under 'careless'
"I was just careless" is the most over-used and least useful diagnosis in Add Math. It hides real method and concept gaps behind a label that requires no fix.
Be honest: if you could not have done the question cleanly a second time, it was not carelessness.
Build a simple mistake log
A mistake log is the single highest-value habit for learning from errors, and it takes minutes. Keep one page (paper or a note on your phone) with a row for each mistake worth remembering:

A short note of what it was, enough to recognise the type again, not the whole question.

The specific wrong step, written out. Vague notes teach nothing; capture the exact line that went wrong.

Why it was wrong
The real cause, and which of the three types it is, slip, method, or concept.

The fix
The correct step, plus a one-line rule to yourself: "check the sign when moving a term", "factorise before substituting", and so on.
The magic is in the review. Read your log before your next practice session, and especially before a test.
Patterns jump out, the same concept gap appearing three times is a flashing arrow pointing at exactly what to fix. A log turns scattered errors into a to-do list.
A worked example: a concept gap hiding as a slip
Here is a classic that students often mislabel as careless. In logarithms, a very common wrong move is to "split" a log of a sum:
The law that actually exists is for the log of a product, not a sum:
A student who writes has not been careless, they have a concept gap: they have blended two different rules. Filing this under "silly mistake" all but ensures it comes back.
Filing it correctly, as a concept gap in the log laws, tells you exactly what to revise: which laws exist, and which tempting look-alikes do not. That is the difference a proper diagnosis makes.
How method marks change what a mistake costs
There is real comfort in how Add Math is marked. Because the marking is analytic, method marks are awarded for correct steps, not only for a perfect final answer.
That means a careless slip near the end of a long question does not automatically wipe out everything before it, if your working is clear, the correct steps still score.
- The subject is assessed in two written papers, with no Paper 3.
- Paper 1: 2 hours, 80 marks, Sections A and B.
- Paper 2: 2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks, Sections A, B and C.
- You use a non-programmable scientific calculator, so clear written method is what carries the marks.
This is exactly why the careless-versus-concept distinction matters so much. A slip you can survive with good working.
A concept gap will cost you the same marks again and again until you fix the underlying idea. Your log tells you which battle you are actually fighting.

I keep making the same mistake even after checking the answer, why?
Because checking the answer fixes the answer, not the cause. If a mistake repeats, it is almost always a method gap or concept gap that reading the solution does not touch.
Write down the exact step that went wrong and why, then revise the underlying idea, that is what stops the repeat.
Is a mistake log really worth the time?
Yes, and it takes only minutes per session. Its value is in review: reading it before practice and before a test surfaces patterns you would otherwise miss, so you spend your effort on the errors that actually keep costing you marks.
How do I tell a careless slip from a real gap?
Ask honestly: could I do this exact question cleanly a second time, right now, without help? If yes, it was probably a slip.
If no, it was a method or concept gap wearing a "careless" disguise, and it needs real revision, not just more care.
If I make a mistake in the exam, is the whole question lost?
Usually not. Because marking is analytic, correct steps still earn method marks even if the final answer is wrong.
That is exactly why showing clear working matters, a slip with visible, correct working costs far less than a bare wrong answer.
